WHAT ARE THE IMPORTANT POINTS TO CONSIDER WHEN YOU BUY KIDS SHOES?

It’s not always easy to choose the right kids shoes. We’ve collected our best tips to help you find the right shoe for the right foot.

WHAT’S THE BEST WAY FOR YOU TO MEASURE A CHILD’S FEET?

The easiest way to measure a child’s foot is to lay a sheet of paper on the floor against a wall and place the child’s foot on the paper with their heel against the wall. Draw a line in front of their longest toe – then measure the distance with a ruler. Make sure your child is standing upright when you measure, as their body weight will press their foot outwards a few millimeters. Measure both feet because it’s not unusual for one foot to be slightly bigger than the other. Once you know the length of the foot, add on growing room depending on the type of footwear.

DIFFERENT TYPES OF FOOTWEAR WILL REQUIRE DIFFERENT GROWING ROOM

Open sandals about 10mm
Closed sandals about 10-15mm
Walking shoes about 10-15mm
Thinly lined autumn/spring ankle boots about 10-15mm
Thickly lined about 15-20mm
Wellies about 15-20mm

HOW MUCH DO KIDS’ FEET GROW?

1-2 years of age about 20mm/year
2-3 years of age about 15mm/year
3-11 years of age about 10mm/year

WHEN ARE SHOES TOO SMALL?

Measure feet from time to time. A child’s foot may grow as much as 5mm in just one month! Shoes that are too small can damage feet because bones grow and develop at a young age. When there’s a gap of less than 5mm in front of the toes, it’s time for new shoes. Each time a person takes a step, their feet move backwards and forwards inside their shoes, so ‘walking room’ of at least 5mm is needed to prevent toes from hitting shoes at every step.

FIRST SHOES

Learn-to-walk shoes should be supple, have thin outer soles and have high tops for good ankle support. It’s easier for the child if the shoe has a sturdy back and proper laces to hold the foot in place and give better support.

USE THE RIGHT SOCKS

Kids’ feet get really sweaty when they play. If it’s cold outside, wool socks are an excellent choice to keep feet cosy and wick away moisture. Wool socks stay warm even when they’re wet.
