Many eager children will be heading back to nursery and school in September. Playful days lie ahead and you need to be ready for sunshine, showers and slush. We have some helpful tips and ideas we’d love to share with you!

Autumn weather can be unpredictable, so the layering principle is a brilliant way to dress a child, whether they’re always on the go or tend to feel the cold. They can add or remove a layer as the need arises. Polarn O. Pyret has spent many years developing and testing new and clever functions on our outer garments. 360-degree reflectors for visibility in the dark, easily detachable hoods for safety, pre-bent sleeves in jackets and pre-bent knees in shell garments to give children greater freedom of movement. A unique snap solution between our shell jacket and fleece jacket that makes a 3-in-1 coat for 365 days of the year. Taped seams, and wind and waterproof materials that are highly durable, are just some of the functions that keep children outdoors playing in all kinds of weather.

Polarn O. Pyret’s back to nursery and school checklist:

  • Marker pen: Helps you stay organized.
  • Moccasins/slippers: Moccasins/slippers with antislip soles are a great idea for little ones playing indoors.
  • Wool socks: The wonderful thing about wool is that it keeps you warm even if it gets a little damp.
  • Thermal layers: Polyester is best for more active children, while wool is a better option for less active children who need more warmth.
  • Wind fleece: Breathable and wicks away moisture. Perfect for autumn adventures.
  • Hat: Cotton works best in early autumn and spring. A windproof hat will keep your child snug in late autumn.
  • Backpack: Good for carrying spare clothes, lunch box or gym clothes.
  • Shell jacket: Combines water and wind resistance with breathability. Wear with a wind fleece on chilly days. Pre-bent sleeves for the best freedom of movement and 360-degree reflectors.
  • Shell trousers: With an adjustable waistband for a perfect fit.
  • Shell mittens: Waterproof with extra long cuffs. Waterproof mittens. Long cuffs help to keep the rain out.
  • Rainwear: Having the right gear for water play is a must when there are puddles to jump in!
  • Wellies: Just add wool socks for guaranteed toasty feet. Coming this autumn! Wellies developed in association with Kavat with removable inner socks.

Polarn O. Pyret’s top tips:

  1. Dress your child in layers so it’s easy to add or remove a layer if they start feeling too warm or cold.
  2. Buy the correct size so your child can move freely. It’s difficult to run around if your trousers are too long, and the ends will get frayed and dirty.
  3. Study the washing instructions before you buy – avoid clothes that need to be washed separately if you want to save time and the environment.
  4. Use more clothes made of wool. Wool retains heat even when it’s damp and will keep your child warm and dry.
  5. Buy clothes that allow your child to move and play freely. Clever details, such as pre-bent sleeves and legs, adjustable waistbands and sleeves, and seams that don’t chafe, ensure a better fit.
  6. Don’t wash clothes too often! It wears out the clothes and the environment. You can often get away with just airing them or wiping outer garments with a damp cloth.
  7. Buy a shell jacket and a wind fleece jacket that snap together for a perfect extra layer when it gets colder. Or use them separately in early spring and autumn.
