Bundle Up and Play Outside

Cold weather doesn’t stop us from playing outside at Polarn O. Pyret. In fact, we dare you to throw your worst weather tales our way so we can find a solution to still get the kids outside to play.

We loved talking to this topic with many parents last month during a Facebook chat with the National Wildlife Federation’s Be Out There team, Ranger Rick Magazine and Suz Lipman, author of Fed Up Frenzy: Slow Parenting in a Fast Moving World.

Here are a few great suggestions that we had and many other outdoor-loving parents suggested as well:

  • Layers. Dressing kids in the correct layers means they can shed as they warm up and play.
  • Take your kids to the bathroom before you get them dressed in layers for outside.
  • Have a change of dry clothes ready for snow or rain play.
  • Designate a plastic tub in your foyer or mudroom during winter for each kid’s outdoor clothes so they are easy to find when ready to play or wash when things get muddy.
  • Buy lots of extra gloves to have as hands get wet and cold and have extras in your car, stroller or handbag.
  • Keep a bag of extra snow gear in the car in case you spot a great place to play along the way.
  • Stock up on winter items at the end of season.
  • For babies, if you don’t have mittens, put a pair of socks on their hands to keep them warm.
  • Put gloves and mittens on before the coat.
  • For extra insurance on keeping feet dry and warm, put plastic bags over socks and then put on boots.
  • Give up on the idea of having a clean/organized mudroom or foyer during the winter months.
