One Hungry Mama Makes a Pie

Baking with kids is a holiday tradition for many families—but, sometimes, the reality isn’t as much fun as the idea of it. The mess and stress of baking with kids can take away the fun, so being prepared is a must. Depending on your child’s age, prepping just a few things ahead of time can make all the difference and bring joy back to a family tradition.

One of my favorite things to make ahead is pie dough. When it’s time to get in the kitchen to make Thanksgiving pies with my kids, I pull out one or two rounds for “serious” pie making, and another one that my littlest can play with.

My older son and I get rolling and then I do the serious work on lining the pie plate with our rolled out dough while he starts measuring ingredients for our pie filling. The little one, in the meantime, is off in his own pie dough world. So sweet… and out of our way!

This approach keeps both boys engaged in an age-appropriate activity and keeps me from stressing over how the recipe is coming out (because the little one dumped in double the sugar or some such natural disaster!).

This weekend is a great time to start making pie dough ahead of time. Make a double or triple batch (so easy to do!) and keep as many rounds as you need for Thanksgiving in the fridge. Then pop the rest in the freezer for other upcoming holiday celebrations.

Hop on over to my pie dough recipe for the specific measurements and directions, and also a photo step-by-step for transferring rolled out pie dough from your work surface to the pie plate.

And if you’re still looking for a great Thanksgiving pie recipe, why not try one of these tasty options:
